frequently asked questions
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture needles are made from tiny filaments, and often you do not feel anything upon insertion. If you do feel the insertion, it is usually only a tiny prick. The needles remain in place for 20-40 minutes, and mostly they will feel as though they have 'disappeared', or as though the needles are no longer in place. The only sensation you are left with is one of relaxation. Sometimes you may get sensations at the point: this may be a tingling, a numbness or heavy sensation, and this is normal. If the sensation at the point is sharp or uncomfortable, you should let the practitioner know, as often only a slight adjustment of the needle will give comfort and relaxation.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture points are reactive points on the body's surface, which can regulate the body's function. Often these points are distant from the organ being treated (for example, some of the most powerful points used to regulate your digestion will be found on your legs). Western theories of how acupuncture works include the involvement of the nervous system, the neuro-hormonal system and the network of connective tissue that surrounds each cell and organ. How long is a course of treatment and how often must I visit?
This depends on (1) how long you've had the condition for which you are seeking treatment; (2) the intensity of the symptoms; and (3) how proactive you are in countering your condition through your lifestyle choices.
Generally speaking, the longer you've had a condition, the more treatment you will require to reverse it. So it's wise to be aware of when your body is not functioning optimally and address it immediately. The intensity of your symptoms will determine whether you get treatment twice a week, weekly, fortnightly or monthly. As your condition improves, we can allow more time between treatments.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the three pillars of health are breathing, movement and nutrition. You can use these not only to counter the ailment you may be experiencing, but also to cultivate health and longevity. You will receive advice on how to adjust your lifestyle to your best advantage.
Will I get a health fund rebate?
All our practitioners are registered with all major health funds for their modality, so if you're covered for acupuncture or remedial massage, you'll be able to claim a refund. Also, on-the-spot claims are available through our HICAPS facility (for participating funds). No health fund rebates are available for herbal medicine consultations.
Will your treatments interfere with my current therapies?
No. The therapies offered at Wholistic Natural Medicine are valuable complements to your current care, and treatment will often enhance the benefit you receive from—and counter the side-effects of—any medications or therapies you may be taking. If herbal medicines are prescribed as part of your treatment, rest assured that your practitioner will check for interactions that may occur between these and your medicines.
Do your treatments really work??
Yes! As many people will tell you, and numerous clinical studies demonstrate, acupuncture, herbal medicines and massage have many benefits, including helping your body counter injury and many types of illness. These therapies also help your body become more resilient to illness and injury in the future.
