acupuncture
Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body that lie on energetic pathways, called meridians or channels. These channels run from your extremities and connect with your organs internally. It is through these channels that we can influence the muscles and joints over which they run (helping you with pain, tension and inflammation), as well as stimulate and regulate the function of the organs to which they connect (helping you with internal conditions). Accordingly, acupuncture is used as an effective treatment for illness, injury, pain and tension — see Things we treat.
Acupuncture's ability to optimise the body's physiological efficiency allows it to be used as preventive medicine. It keeps your body supple, helping prevent injury. It regulates the way that organs function with one another, so that your system is working efficiently and is able to ward off infections, adjust to changes in its environment and buffer the disruptive effects of stress. In this way acupuncture increases your resilience to stress, illness and injury and leaves you with a feeling of vitality and mental clarity.
The two styles of acupuncture that are offered at wnm are traditional Chinese acupuncture and Japanese acupuncture. Both styles have been shown to be effective for the many conditions that acupuncture can treat.
Traditional Chinese acupuncture is the style of acupuncture that has been practised in China over millennia. All acupuncturists that practice traditional Chinese acupuncture at wnm also practice traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
Japanese acupuncture (also called meridian therapy) adheres to traditional theory but has developed a distinct style of treatment over the last 1000 years. Japanese acupuncture uses finer needles and shallower insertion techniques, often supplemented by moxibustion heat therapy and massage. These gentler techniques are suitable for all clients, but might be especially helpful for clients with an aversion to needles.
